The basics

Today I am grateful for the basic things in life that we all take for granted. I am thankful for clean water to drink, a roof over my head, and food to eat. If you honestly think about it these are the basic things we need to live and I am grateful that I don't have to worry about them everyday. I know there are millions of people around the world that do have to worry about this and it hurts me. There are thousands of people in the United States alone that have to decide between paying rent and putting food on the table. I wish I could reach out and help every single one of them, but I know I can't.

Due to the economic uncertainty of the time we live in more and more people have to make this choice and many people who never imagined they would be in such a situation.
So today I give thanks for the basics and I believe we all should.

Long Day...

Today has been a long day. I cut my finger while doing dishes, my dog BIT me (he has never even tried to bite me), and I got hit in the face with a rouge elbow.... So at the end of that I'm thankful for pumpkin cheesecake bars.
THE END.

Traditions

Today I am grateful for my family, all of them. Grandparents, cousins, uncles, great aunts, etc. These people are like a living breathing road map of genetics. I love to look at my family and say, "I have your nose" or "I make that look too!" Everyone brings something different and unique into my life and for that I am eternally grateful.
Let me focus for just a moment on my grandparents... I don't think anyone in the history of the world has had better grandparents. My grandpa Tom has always told me "Make Grandpa proud" and sometimes before I make a big decision I ask myself "Would my grandpa be proud of me?" If you don't think that is one powerful motivator, you obviously haven't met Mr. Tommy Dean Withers. Anywho, I have the best of every world with my grandparents. My grandma Thelma can make a pie out of nothing and it will knock your socks off, she also can get any stain out of any item, ever! It's truly amazing. My grandma Glenda is adventurous and will go eat sushi with me and loves to travel. My grandpa Tom is a natural born storyteller and a world famous 'coon hunter. And my grandpa Bud was hilarious and one of the most caring men on the planet (ok, I'm bias because I'm his granddaughter but I'm entitled to be).

My family is amazing and they are some of the craziest, coolest, most amazing people God has ever made and I am proud to say I'm related to every one of them :).

Two for One

I was really busy yesterday so I missed posting, oops. But that means you get 2 today!
Last night and this morning I had a super awful headache which has prompted me to be very very grateful for modern medicine. Think of the advances the medical community has made in recent years, nothing short of amazing. Also, I feel like it needs to be said... I thank god just about every day for ibuprofen. Honestly, think how many days this drug has saved, for me that is nothing short of a miracle.
The second thing I am grateful for today is.... My dog, Sam. He's pretty much my child and he is fantastic. Also, he smiles. And when I come home after being gone for a little while the greeting I receive from him can't be rivaled. He smiles the biggest smile imaginable for a dog and not only does his tail wag but his whole body does. It makes everything right with the world :)

Friday Funnies

Since today is Friday, and let's face it, everyone loves Fridays I thought I would give you something I'm grateful for that's a little more lighthearted. So here it goes... Today I'm grateful for chocolate. Honestly, where would we be in this world without chocolate? I mean what would people's guilty pleasure be? Celery or, god forbid, people would be addicted to EXERCISING!
Anywho, I love chocolate. At the end of an awful day I think a reese's peanut buttercup is heavenly :). Happy Friday everyone.

The Power

When I was in elementary school I always thought I wasn't as smart as the other kids because I had to take time out of the day to go to a different class room... The special ed room. I was diagnosed very early with ADD and a learning disability that effected my reading skills. And yes, I was medicated. I know that is a big controversy now but I believe it was the best thing for me. It was very hard for me to read like the other kids or even spell like them. But I soon realized that I, in fact, wasn't stupid I just had to go about it in a different way.
Flash forward to high school graduation, I'm in the top 15% of my class with honor classes and successfully completed the entire math department (minus statistics), I received a 27 on my ACTs and will be starting college in the fall at a top engineering school. Accomplished? I say, yes. I went on to that college and decided that engineering and math weren't for me (who knew?), on to psychology we go. I graduate in 4 years with my bachelors in Psychology.
Now some of this may seem pretty "normal" and by no means was I the best student but I made it. I did it, on my own, learning disabilities and all. So today I am grateful for my education because it is something no one can take away from me no matter how hard they try. Through my education I not only learned facts and equations but I learned about myself. I found out how I learn best, how my brain works, problem solving and balance.
Not only am I grateful for my education but I am grateful that I have the right to get an education. I heard a story the other day about a girl in Iraq that had to dress like a boy and walk miles upon miles day just so she could learn to read. She had to dress like a boy because women are allowed to get an education. So by doing this she risked her life and possibly the lives of her family members. I believe this is beautiful and horrific all in the same moment. It is beautiful that she is so very determined to get an education and that she realized how important her education is that she took these risks. But it is also horrific because of the basic injustice that is happening to all of the women that don't take these risks. How will they ever learn how beautiful the far away rain forest is? Or how to read the books that have inspired so many? This is truly and undeniably unfair. Another reason that this is horrifying to me is because how people in our country take education for granted. I know I did when I was a kid, I think all children do. But I feel as though if I would have known how this girl in Iraq is fighting for her education it would have made me value mine a little more.
In short, I entitled this blog "The Power" simply because I truly believe that knowledge is power. And I gained my knowledge through my education which, in the end, empowered me to be a better person.

Don't take it for granted. Have a great day :)

A little bit of life.

On a whim today I applied to a temp agency. This unemployment thing is really driving me batty. Almost immediately, I wasn't even finished with the application, I received a call and I have an interview with them tomorrow morning. I'm optimistically excited and a bit nervous, it's been a while since I've had a real interview.
Just think about me tomorrow, we will see how this goes.
